No Freedom Without Freedom For Women
New music, new podcast, and of course, there's St. Patrick's Day
Greetings from the B-Side Brewery! Hope you’re all taking care of yourselves. I’ve got a pretty busy and exciting month coming up, so I wanted to share goings-on with all of you’s lovely folks. First up: tunes!
“Oh Dolours” now streaming everywhere!
Since March is both Women’s History Month and Irish Heritage Month, it only made sense for my indie rock band The Roland High Life to release a brand new song combining both of those things. “Oh Dolours” sounds sort of like if Weezer wrote a song about the Irish Republican Army, and features our dear friends from the band Indoor Friends on backing vocals. It’s sort of built around an Irish saying, “Ní saoirse go saoirse na mBan” — “There’s no freedom until there’s freedom for women.”*
Today is also Bandcamp Friday, which means that if you buy the song on Bandcamp, we get 100% after credit card fees. But you can listen on Spotify or whatever, too. (My Irish Folk Music solo albums are also up for Bandcamp Friday, if ya want.)
You can also come hear the song ✨live✨ on March 16 at the Midway Cafe in JP. It’s an all-ages matinee show starting at 3pm; I think the Roland High Life hits the stage around 5pm. We’ve got some other exciting shows coming up as well, but I’m not allowed to talk about those yet. (Doesn’t the secret make it so much more exciting?)
New kids adventure podcast launches next week!
I’ve been working on a fun new kids musical adventure podcast for Double Elvis Productions called Musicland Stories. I wrote two scripts for the first season, an intergalactic funk roadtrip that was otherwise overseen by my good friend Bob Proehl (author of the criminally under-appreciated literary superhero Resonant series). You can listen to the whole thing now; the episodes are about 15 minutes each, very fun and family-friendly, with sort of a music-themed Doctor Who vibe.
The second season of the show launches next week — and this one, I wrote entirely on my own! It’s an undersea adventure story with a big ensemble cast. Sort of like a classic Saturday Morning Cartoon, but with more rock & roll.
You can find Musicland Stories wherever you cast yer pods.
And of course, the inevitable St. Paddy’s Day show!
You knew this was coming, right? Sunday, March 17 at 3pm, I’ll be at Aeronaut Brewing in Somerville, playing all your favorite anti-Imperial Irish songs (and some of the fun/silly/love-y ones, too). This time I’ll be joined by my bandmates Chris Correia and Jake WM, turning the tunes into a big loud Irish Americana folk rock trio. Which should be pretty fun! We’ve got around three hours of music planned, so there’s plenty of time to stop by!
Did I mention there will be beer?
I think that’s all I got for now. Okay that’s not entirely true; but you don’t want to hear whatever rants are rolling through my head about the state of the world right now.
Now take care of yourselves, okay?
*This should not require clarification, but in case it does: “women” includes trans women, Palestinian women, and every other femme person out there.
But, will there be beer?
