A death, a song, a birthday, and some new Spotify rules
"Scotty Says" now streaming everywhere! But also at my birthday party
Dia daoibh, a chairde! It’s been a minute, but I’m here to tell you that my band the Roland High Life just dropped a brand new banger and you can listen to it everywhere you do that sorta music streaming thing. It’s called “Scotty Says” and it’s about, well, a thing that my friend Scotty, uhh, said.
Okay specifically it’s about the last thing he told me before he passed away. But not in a super sad way, I swear. He sent me a message saying, “I've met many singers in my day, famous and not so famous. But you're are the only one i've ever known whose speaking voice sounds exactly like their singing voice. that's not an insult, so please don't take it that way...but i listen to your songs, and every time i think 'it's like Thom is here'.”
So yeah. That sort of haunted me for the last 11 years. So naturally, I wrote a song about it. And I think it’s pretty good, too! This was also my first time recording a full band live using analog equipment, and mixing that with minimal overdubs, so that was pretty cool as well. The results are pretty good, in my humble opinion — but you should check it out and decide for yourself!
Also because Spotify just changed its streaming royalty policy so that you literally don’t get paid if your song gets less than 1,000 streams. They still generate revenue from the song, of course; they just give it to someone who’s better and prettier and more special than you (read: probably Taylor Swift, idk). And so that sucks! But you can help us get this song over that coveted 1,000 play mark, so we can maybe someday buy a sandwich or something. (From there, we graduate to the greatest dream of rockstardom: finally making $1000 and then paying half of it back at tax time).
It’s my party, I’ll rock out if I want to
In related news, my birthday is coming up at the end of the month — and by sheer coincidence, the band got asked to play a show that night at one of our favorite Allston dive bars. What better way to celebrate than rocking out with friends?
Please consider this your official invitation to join me on Wednesday, November 29 at the Silhouette Lounge for some decent drinks and even better tunes. The show should be done by 11 or so, so you can even get home at a moderately reasonable hour.
I’m sure I have other important to share with y’all here, but I’ve been working on some things I ✨can’t really talk about yet✨ (isn’t that fun?) so you’ll just have to bear with me for now.
